CockroachesThe most common type of cockroach found in homes and other establishments is the German cockroach. These cockroaches are about 1/2" long, have a flattened shape, are reddish-brown, and have two dark vertical stripes behind the head.
Another common cockroach is the brown-banded roach. This roach is also about 1/2" long but has a slightly lighter shade of brown than the German roach does. It also does not have the two vertical stripes behind its head. This roach has two lighter colored bands running horizontally across the back.
Habits
Both of the German and brown-banded roaches do not like light. They will hide in dark cracks and crevices during the day and come out during the night time to feed. When detected, they can move very fast. These roaches will eat just about anything, especially food residue, crumbs, and grease. It is impractical to keep a house clean enough so they cannot survive, but keeping it clean does help.
Prevention
Cockroaches need shelter, food, and water to survive. Limiting these will greatly help prevent an infestation. Keep the kitchen area clean, clean up spills as soon as they happen, and try to clean in hard to reach areas like behind the stove or refrigerator. Try to limit the amount of clutter to prevent any potential hiding areas.
Control
Generally, if you have a cockroach problem, you will need to have a professional help you. An thorough inspection should be done in finding areas where roaches may be harboring. We use a combination of pesticides to treat roaches, gel bait placed in hiding areas, and a growth regulator. These treatments usually need at least two visits to remove all cockroaches.
